Cold, clean and icy, the Antarctic atmosphere is renowned for generating extraordinary colours. The
vibrant oranges seen at sunset are caused by the long path of the sunlight through the atmosphere as
the sun nears the horizon. Light is scattered by molecular gases and small ice crystals in the clouds.
