Towards the end of the Antarctic summer, the soft insulating down found on Adélie penguin chicks is replaced by waterproof adult feathers. With very little waterproofing yet in place, this seven week old chick has just experienced its first Antarctic blizzard. Summer temperatures and snow melt had caused a quagmire of mud and penguin poo—the perfect consistency for down dreadlocks.
